The people of Tumu in the Sissala East Municipality of the Upper West Region on Tuesday commemorated the 75th anniversary of the passing of Kuoro Wogorei Kanton II with a colourful display of the Bayiila (Warrior) dance, a revered traditional performance symbolising bravery, unity, and cultural pride.
The dance performance formed part of a series of activities marking the milestone anniversary of the late paramount chief, who passed away on January 29, 1951. Dressed in traditional war regalia and accompanied by rhythmic drumming and chanting, performers reenacted historic warrior movements, drawing admiration from residents, visitors, and traditional authorities present at the event.
Although the anniversary is observed annually, this year’s commemoration is receiving heightened attention due to the significance of the 75-year mark. Community elders described the milestone as an opportunity to reflect on the legacy of Kuoro Wogorei Kanton II, whose reign was characterised by leadership, resilience, and the preservation of Sissala customs and traditions.
Speaking to Yiri News, some residents noted that the Bayiila dance is not only a cultural display but also a reminder of the sacrifices made by past leaders in safeguarding the identity and cohesion of the Tumu traditional area.
other activities undertaken include friendly football matches and other outdoor fun games.
The ongoing activities are expected to be climaxed on Wednesday with a grand durbar at the Tumu Kuoro Durbar Grounds. The durbar will bring together traditional rulers, opinion leaders, government representatives, youth groups, and members of the public to pay homage to the late Kuoro and reaffirm their commitment to peace, unity, and development in the area.
Organisers say the event also serves as a platform to educate the younger generation about their history and cultural heritage while strengthening communal bonds among the people of Tumu.
The 75th anniversary celebration underscores the enduring influence of Kuoro Wogorei Kanton II and the importance of preserving indigenous traditions as a foundation for community identity and progress.
