President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans by his government to construct a new airport in Wa as part of a broader initiative to upgrade aviation infrastructure in the northern sector of the country.
According to the President, the current location of the Wa Airport is unsuitable as it interferes with the Wa–Hamile trunk road, posing safety and operational challenges. He further noted that the sloping nature of the tarmac and other structural limitations make the facility less ideal for long-term aviation use.
President Mahama revealed that similar airport projects are also planned for Sunyani and Bolgatanga to enhance regional connectivity and support economic development across the northern and middle belts.
Delivering his message during the State of the Nation Address in Parliament, the President reaffirmed his government’s commitment to commencing and completing the projects within the planned development framework.
He emphasized that relocating the Wa Airport to a more appropriate site will improve safety, ease road traffic congestion, and position the Upper West Region as a more accessible destination for investment, tourism, and trade.
The proposed project is expected to significantly boost transportation infrastructure in the region while addressing longstanding concerns about the current airport’s proximity to the major trunk road.
