Regional Chairman of the National Union of Tricycle Operators Ghana (NUTOG) Upper West Branch Saboggu Salifu, has issued a strong directive to all tricycle operators to immediately purchase and emboss official stickers from their respective district assemblies. Whether hauling goods in “nyaaba lorries” or ferrying passengers in the “Mahama Can Do” tricycles, operators in Wa must visit the Wa Municipal Assembly, while those in other districts follow suit with their local authorities.
“This is not optional, it’s the law,” Salifu emphasized, warning that non-compliance invites penalties.
In a public notice circulated to members, Salifu detailed the requirements: Operators must pay GH¢30 at the NUTOG Upper West Regional Branch office to obtain stickers. Defaulters would arrested by the police and made to pay a fine of GH¢60.
“Operating without the official assembly sticker is not permitted. Please comply to avoid penalties,” the notice states.
The push follows government directives to tricycle unions nationwide, prompting fruitful discussions last month between NUTOG leaders and the Mayor of Wa.
“Our success or failure as a union depends on our relationship with the assembly,” Salifu added, underscoring the need for cooperation.
This initiative comes as many districts in the Upper West Region grapple with dismal revenue generation. Local Government Ministry data reveals Wa Municipal Assembly lags behind national averages, collecting under 40% of projected internally generated funds (IGF) in 2025, hampered by weak enforcement, informal economies, and low compliance in sectors like transport.
