James Sohimwininye, a two-time former parliamentary candidate for Progressive People’s Party (PPP) in the Wa Central constituency of the Upper West Region has decried the devastating impact of the banking sector cleanup, which left approximately 4,000 GN Bank workers among the 75,000 individuals rendered jobless nationwide.

The aggrieved former employees of GN Bank expressed their frustration over the lack of progress in addressing their plight despite numerous efforts to seek redress.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, November 5, 2024, in Wa, Mr. Sohimwininye who doubles as the former regional manager of GN Bank highlighted the group’s attempts to secure intervention.

“We submitted a petition to the Speaker of Parliament through the Deputy Clerk of Parliament and also appealed to the Chief of Staff, but no progress was made,” he stated.

He further revealed that shareholders of affected financial institutions had engaged in discussions with the government and the Bank of Ghana, while the workers organized a press conference to amplify their concerns and according to him, these efforts have been met with silence.

The former employees, many of whom have endured years of economic hardship, now see the forthcoming elections as an opportunity to demand accountability. Declaring their political stance, Mr. Sohimwininye announced the group’s support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

“As the elections approach, we find it necessary to declare our support for His Excellency, former President John Dramani Mahama. We urge voters to support the parliamentary candidates of the NDC as well,” he said.

He called on all affected GN Bank workers and their families, as well as the bank’s customers, to align themselves with Mahama’s campaign, expressing hope that his leadership would provide a path to “liberation.”
