The Wa Municipal Assembly is poised to gain $5.8 million from a $40 million nationwide initiative by the African Development Bank (AfDB) to deliver climate-resilient water systems, addressing chronic water scarcity exacerbated by climate change and illegal mining.A high-level delegation from the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation, Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), and other agencies met with Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nurah Issah Danwana, to outline implementation plans.
The project will expand the existing Jambusi water facility to serve all communities in the metropolis, targeting 6,000 households with sustainable, affordable, and equitable water access. Hon. Danwanaa welcomed the initiative, emphasizing its urgency in underserved areas like Konjiahe, Samanbo, Dignafuro, Tampieni, and others.
Announcing the high level engagement on his Meta page Hon Danwana stated that, “We highlighted the critical need for quality water expansion works, particularly to counter the devastating impact of illegal mining on our water bodies,” he stated. The assembly leader stressed community engagement to ensure long-term success and direct benefits for residents.
Key project pillars of the project include include:sustainability and affordability for low-income earners, climate change mitigation and adaptation measures, support for agriculture, transportation, and energy infrastructure, equitable distribution of water resources and robust stakeholder involvement.
The delegation underscored the project’s focus on resilience against environmental challenges, promising a “great sense of relief” for Wa’s residents through improved water security.
The Wa Municipal Assembly has committed to close collaboration for seamless execution, marking a significant step toward sustainable development in northern Ghana.
