Despite vocal opposition from some residents, the Wa Municipal Assembly remains steadfast in its plan to relocate Tendamba Primary School a community fixture for over 70 years to make way for a flagship 24-hour economy market promised by the Mahama administration.
The assembly is racing to complete renovations of six classroom and office space at nearby Nuriya Primary and JHS, as well as three disused classrooms at Tendamba JHS, totaling nine upgraded spaces. Once finished, students and staff from Tendamba Primary and Kindergarten will shift to these temporary facilities.
A visit to the sites BY THE Yiri News Team revealed brisk progress. Workers were seen replacing entire roofs, plastering walls, and laying fresh floors across all structures.
Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Nurah Issah Danwana assured the Waala Traditional Council weeks ago that the move is interim. “Ultramodern buildings will rise on the original site, transforming Tendamba into a model school,” he said.
The proposal has divided the community. Initial uproar came from Tendamba (landlords) from Sokpayiri, who resisted surrendering the land. Yet two weeks ago, representatives from all four Wa landlord gates endorsed the relocation, paving the way for the market.
Prominent opposition persists, however, including from Supreme Court Justice Emmanuel Yoni Kulendi, a school alumnus who has publicly decried the plan.
Assembly sources say renovations will wrap up in weeks, with relocation to follow swiftly.
