A renewed chieftaincy dispute in Funsi, the capital of the Wa East District in the Upper West Region, has claimed the lives of three people, heightening tension and fear within the community.
The violence reportedly erupted on Friday night at about 9:00 p.m. when two unidentified masked gunmen opened fire in the town, killing two individuals on the spot.
The situation further escalated in the early hours of Saturday after another person was fatally shot around 4:00 a.m. in the Gbelonosi section of Funsi, bringing the death toll to three.
Sources within the community say the latest violence is linked to an ongoing chieftaincy dispute between rival factions in the area.
Residents disclosed that tensions intensified earlier on Friday when a group of elders from one section of the town were allegedly attacked while attempting to pay a courtesy call on the traditional chief.
The development reportedly sparked unrest and heightened hostilities among the feuding groups, eventually culminating in the deadly shootings.
The Wa East District Police Command has since commenced investigations into the incidents. Security personnel are said to be monitoring the situation closely as efforts are being made to restore calm in the community.
Meanwhile, residents are calling on government, traditional authorities, and security agencies to intervene swiftly to prevent further violence and loss of lives.
