The Wa Municipal Assembly and MTN Ghana on Tuesday, 2 May 2026, handed over a contract to reconstruct and widen the drainage in front of MTN’s Wa office, a key move aimed at reducing flooding and improving pedestrian safety in the Wa central business district (CBD).
The public–private project, valued at more than GHC 370,000, will be funded jointly by MTN Ghana and the Wa Municipal Assembly, with MTN covering 70% of the cost and the assembly providing the remaining 30%. Under the contract, contractors will remove the existing narrow gutter and replace it with a larger, more durable drainage system designed to handle heavy rainfall typical of the area.
Speaking at the handover, Wa Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Alhaj Issah Nurah Danwana said the assembly approached MTN to support the initiative and welcomed the company’s willingness to shoulder the majority of the expense. “This partnership demonstrates how local government and the private sector can collaborate to deliver infrastructure that directly benefits residents,” he said.
Madam Emelia Anang, Branch Manager for MTN Wa, said the upgrade will not only strengthen stormwater management but also enhance pedestrian safety and give the office frontage a cleaner, modern appearance. She reiterated MTN Ghana’s commitment to investing in community infrastructure as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.
Work is scheduled to begin immediately, with both parties assuring residents that measures will be taken to minimize disruption during construction.
The project forms part of MTN Ghana’s broader community support initiatives across the Upper West Region which seeks to bring relief to many people.
