Abdul‑Bassit Alhassan, popularly known as Al Bassit Sessey, has declared his intention to contest the position of Communications Director for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Wa East constituency.
Bassit Sessey, who served as the NPP’s Upper West Regional Administrator from 2018 to 2022, said he is ready to play a central role in shaping party communications in his home constituency.
He described the timing as right for new leadership that can sharpen messaging and rebuild support on the ground.
“I have always put the party first,” Bassit said. “Whether through social media, radio or other platforms, I have consistently promoted the party’s message and rebutted misinformation from our detractors.” He highlighted his active participation in the regional communications team as key experience for the role.
Earlier in his political career, Abdul‑Bassit served as an aide to the former NPP Wa East constituency chairman, popularly known as Chairman Big Sam. He also noted his role as Deputy Regional Coordinator for the Friends of DMB group in 2008.
On the 2024 general election, Bassit said he contributed both resources and time to the campaign and was part of the collation team on polling day, December 7.
He argued that stronger, more intentional communications will help the NPP recapture the Wa East parliamentary seat and improve the party’s performance nationally.
“We have relied on familiar faces for too long. Our fortunes and votes have been slipping. Why not try someone new? We cannot keep doing the same thing and expect different results,” he told Yiri News.
The contest comes at a notable moment for the party’s internal rules.
The position of Communications Director, previously selected by other means, will be filled through an election following amendments made by the NPP last year — making this the first time communications directors will be chosen at the ballot box.
Currently, Wontina Bamutu serves as the Wa East constituency communications director, a position he has held for close to twelve years. He has recently served notice of aspiring to contest as 1st Vice Regional chairman for the NPP.
