The Wa–Charia road which began showing signs of deterioration only months after its 2024 construction, will undergo urgent remedial works following a joint inspection led by the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Nurah Issah Danwana.

Hon. Danwana led a multi‑stakeholder team that included representatives from the World Bank, the Ghana Secondary Cities Support Programme (GSCS), engineering consultants from AESL, and the contractor P&W Ghanem to examine what he described as the “deplorable” state of the road.

The visit formed part of routine monitoring and evaluation activities for assemblies participating in the GSCS programme.

During the assessment, the team investigated suspected contractual and constructional defects, identified critical sections requiring immediate attention, and discussed engineering options to restore accessibility for residents and commuters.

Among the recommended interventions are the construction of two new culverts and additional U‑drains to improve drainage and prevent further pavement failure.

“We identified critical sections that require urgent attention and the additional works and engineering solutions to improve accessibility for residents and commuters,” Hon. Danwana wrote on his official Facebook page.

“We intend to add two culverts and U‑drains to improve the quality of the road. We are determined to fix it.” He added.

Local residents have expressed relief at the announcement after months of inconvenience and concerns about safety and transport costs. Road users had complained about potholes and pooling water along sections of the route, problems that municipal authorities and the contractor are now promising to address.

The GSCS programme, funded in part by the World Bank, supports infrastructure improvements and urban management in Ghana’s secondary cities.

The involvement of the World Bank and independent consultants signals heightened scrutiny over project delivery and quality assurance for works executed under the programme.

Hon. Danwana said the interventions will be implemented as part of an agreed corrective action plan.

He did not provide a timeline for the repairs but emphasized the municipality’s commitment to ensuring the road is restored to a serviceable standard.
