A land-related clash between the Buo and Tiwii communities in the Sissala West District on Sunday, 27 September 2026, has left two people dead and others injured, prompting an urgent appeal for calm from the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu.
Security agencies, including the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana Armed Forces, have been deployed to the affected communities by the Regional and District Security Councils to restore order while investigations continue.
In a press statement issued on Monday, MP Sukparu described the incident as “deeply saddening” and extended condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing the injured a full and speedy recovery.
He urged residents of Buo, Tiwii and neighbouring communities to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid any acts of retaliation, provocation or violence that could escalate tensions and lead to further loss of life and property.“No land dispute is worth another life”. The MP stressed.
“As a son of both communities, I appeal to our chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, youth, women and all stakeholders to use their influence to promote peace and prevent further escalation,” Sukparu said.
“Whatever differences exist between us, no land or boundary dispute is worth the loss of another human life.”
Security deployment, call for cooperation
The MP confirmed that security personnel are already on the ground to help maintain calm as investigations into the circumstances of the clash proceed.
He called on all parties and residents to fully cooperate with the security agencies, and asked anyone with relevant information to come forward to assist authorities in establishing the facts and ensuring due process.
Land disputes are not new in parts of the Upper West Region, including Sissala West, where past conflicts between neighbouring communities have at times threatened peace and development.
Previous incidents in the district have seen regional authorities and traditional leaders urging dialogue and mediation through the Regional House of Chiefs as the preferred path to resolution.
The Buo–Tiwii clash underscores the need for sustained peacebuilding, clear boundary documentation, and stronger local mechanisms to manage land-related grievances before they turn violent.
For now, the focus in Buo and Tiwii is on preventing further violence, supporting the injured and bereaved, and allowing security and investigative bodies to do their work without interference.
Community leaders, traditional authorities and local officials are expected to play a key role in calming tensions and creating space for dialogue once the immediate security situation stabilises.
