The Nandom Municipal Assembly has disbursed GH¢271,380 from the Disability Fund to 66 beneficiaries to support livelihoods, education, skills development and other economic empowerment initiatives for persons with disabilities in the municipality.

Speaking at the Disability Fund Disbursement Forum on Thursday, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Anthony Ziniel, said the exercise underscored the Assembly’s commitment to inclusion, equity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities.

He described the programme as more than the distribution of financial support, stressing that it reflects the Assembly’s resolve to empower persons with disabilities to participate fully in the municipality’s social and economic development.

The MCE assured beneficiaries that the Disability Fund would continue to be managed in a transparent, fair and accountable manner, noting that beneficiaries were selected through established guidelines, careful assessment of applications and recommendations by the Disability Fund Management Committee in collaboration with the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development.

Providing a breakdown of the disbursement, the Director of the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, Naa Biliguo Shirazudeen Enoch, said a total of GH¢271,380 had been approved for distribution to 66 beneficiaries.

According to him, the Nandom Deaf Association received GH¢13,340 to support its participation in the National Deaf Conference scheduled for September 2026, while the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) Association in Nandom was allocated GH¢4,077 to organise its upcoming elections.

He explained that the remaining amount was disbursed directly to individual persons with disabilities to support education, healthcare, skills training, business development and other livelihood activities.

Hon. Ziniel encouraged beneficiaries to utilise the funds and other support strictly for their intended purposes, saying prudent use of the resources would improve livelihoods, strengthen economic independence and demonstrate the positive impact of the programme.

He also urged beneficiaries to cooperate with Assembly officials during monitoring and evaluation exercises, explaining that the visits were intended to provide technical support, assess progress and ensure the objectives of the programme were achieved.

The MCE acknowledged that many persons with disabilities continue to face barriers in education, employment, healthcare, transportation and access to public services. He therefore reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to implementing policies and programmes that promote accessibility, protect the rights of persons with disabilities and create equal opportunities for all.

He further called on traditional leaders, families, civil society organisations, religious bodies and the private sector to complement government efforts by supporting persons with disabilities through advocacy, skills development, employment opportunities and social inclusion.

Hon. Ziniel expressed appreciation to the Government of Ghana, the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, the Department of Social Welfare and Community Development, development partners, traditional authorities and all stakeholders whose contributions made the disbursement exercise possible. He wished all beneficiaries success and expressed confidence that the support would have a lasting positive impact on their lives and the development of the Nandom Municipality.
