A three-year-old girl has died following an accidental shooting incident at Paayaan in the Nandom Municipality of the Upper West Region.
The tragic incident occurred on February 2, 2026, at about 10:37 a.m., according to the Nandom District Police Command.
Police say they received a distress call from the Assembly Member for the Paayaan Electoral Area, reporting that a juvenile had accidentally discharged a locally manufactured firearm belonging to his father, injuring two children in the household.
The deceased has been identified as Blessing Kuubesori, aged three.
Her 12-year-old sibling sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment at St. Theresa Catholic Hospital in Nandom.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the locally manufactured pistol, which allegedly belonged to the children’s father, was loaded at the time of the incident. The juvenile reportedly handled the firearm in a room where the two children were present, and it discharged, resulting in the fatal injury.
Police officers who visited the scene retrieved the firearm and an expended cartridge for evidential purposes.
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the hospital morgue pending autopsy.
Both the father, Dongzuor Kuubesori aged 65 and the juvenile are currently assisting police with investigations.
Authorities say the matter will be processed in accordance with the law.
Police have indicated that further investigations are ongoing.
