Residents of Tantuo Electoral Area in the Nandom Municipality on Friday, 17th April, 2026, turned out in large numbers to benefit from a health screening exercise organized by the Assembly Member, Simon Aabalekuu.

The exercise, aimed at improving community health and encouraging residents to know their medical status, particularly focused on screening for Hepatitis B. The event attracted a diverse group of participants, including a significant number of elderly residents.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Fidelis Zabogi, the Nurse-in-Charge of the Puffien Sub-District, explained that the initiative was a collaboration between the health directorate and the Assembly Member. He noted that community members were screened for Hepatitis B, with those testing positive referred to health facilities for further management, while those who tested negative would be scheduled for vaccination.

Also present at the durbar was the Municipal Chief Executive, Anthony Ziniel, who commended the initiative and urged residents to prioritize their health by adopting healthy lifestyles.

Speaking to the media, Hon. Simon Aabalekuu emphasized that the health of his constituents remains a top priority. He noted that many people in rural communities are unaware of their health status, especially concerning Hepatitis B, which can have serious long-term effects if left untreated. According to him, the screening exercise was part of deliberate efforts to bring healthcare closer to the people.

He further assured residents of his commitment to initiating more community-based interventions, particularly in the areas of health and sanitation. He called on residents to take advantage of such opportunities whenever they are organized, stressing that early detection and prevention are key to reducing the burden of disease in the community.

Beyond health, the MCE used the platform to remind community members of their civic responsibilities. He encouraged them to obtain permits from the Municipal Assembly before undertaking any building projects and to fulfill their obligation of paying property taxes to support local development.

He further highlighted ongoing development efforts within the municipality, stating that the Assembly, through the District Assembly Common Fund, is implementing several projects. These include the construction of CHPS compounds in Bapula and Tokuu, a Junior High School block in Monyupele, and Kindergarten blocks in Betaglu and Zimuopare.

Additionally, the Assembly is investing in water infrastructure, with plans to install ten hand pumps and five mechanized boreholes across various communities.

The health screening exercise forms part of broader efforts to improve both the health and living conditions of residents in the Tantuo Electoral Area.
