On Tuesday, May 26, 2026, following violent clashes linked to the Funsi chieftaincy dispute in the Upper West Region. 34 Suspects were arraigned before the Wa magistrate court court after their arrest last Saturday.
According to court records and police statements, 34 people were initially arrested in connection with the disturbances that erupted in Funsi earlier this month. This was after three people died in the violence, over chieftaincy in Funsi which also left several others injured and caused property damage in parts of the community.
At Tuesday’s sitting, prosecutors presented charges that included murder, stealing and other offenses arising from the confrontation.
The magistrate discharged seven elderly suspects — who were described in court as having no direct involvement in the fatal acts — and remanded the remaining 27 accused to reappear before the court on a date set by the magistrate to allow the police to conclude investigations.
The police said the arrests and subsequent court action form part of broader efforts to restore calm and hold those responsible to account. Security deployments have been intensified in and around Funsi to prevent further violence and protect residents while investigators collect evidence and interview witnesses.
Local leaders and regional authorities have appealed for calm and urged all parties to allow the justice process to run its course.
The Upper West Regional Police Command said it will provide periodic updates as investigations progress and encouraged anyone with information to come forward.
Meanwhile, the disputed Funsi chief, Kuoro Adikibe Dagbasi Basuglo Sampuo III was inducted as a member of the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs on Tuesday.
