Dr. Kamal-Deen Ali (Naval Capt. Rtd), Director‑General of the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA), will in the coming days commission six mechanized boreholes installed for communities across the Upper West Region, the Authority announced.
The boreholes delivered through a collaboration between the Ghana Maritime Authority, the Upper West Regional Minister Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing Esq and humanitarian group Humanity First Ghana, serve schools and communities in Wa Metropolis, Jirapa, Wa East and Nandom Municipalities.
Beneficiaries are include Boli Primary/JHS , TI Ahmadiyya SHS, Wa Metropolis and Biihee community in Wa Metropolis. The rest have been constructed in, Jirapa in the Jirapa Municipality, Motigu in the Wa East District and Guo, Nandom Municipal.
Although the GMA’s mandate traditionally focuses on maritime safety and regulation along Ghana’s coastline, Dr. Ali said the project reflects a broader interpretation of the Authority’s mission as a “Safety Authority” that safeguards lives both on and off the water.
The initiative is part of the GMA’s corporate social responsibility programme to improve access to safe water in underserved and remote communities.

The mechanized systems are intended to provide reliable, year‑round water supplies to households and schools, reducing the burden of water collection, supporting sanitation and hygiene, and improving learning conditions for pupils.
The borehole project builds on earlier GMA humanitarian activity in the region, including distribution of life jackets to canoe operators on the Black Volta following a fatal drowning in Lawra Municipality. Residents in the beneficiary communities expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Ali and the Authority, saying the project demonstrates that state agencies can prioritize public welfare alongside revenue duties.
