The Chief Executive of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Mr. Julius Neequaye Kotey, has promised that the authority will capture the construction of a permanent district office in Tumu in its budget next year.
This follows a generous offer by the Tumu Kuoro and the chiefs of the Sissala Traditional Area to provide free land for the construction of a befitting office and staff bungalows.
The commitment was made during the official commissioning of the new DVLA Tumu District Office on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
The newly opened facility marks a major milestone in decentralizing public services, sparing residents of the Sissala enclave from traveling long distances to Wa to access licensing and vehicle registration services.
Speaking at the event, the Tumu Kuoro, Paramount Chief of the Tumu Traditional Area, announced that the chiefs and people of Tumu are ready to make suitable land available without delay. He respectfully entreated the Chief Executive, whom the traditional council adopted as a son and prince of Tumu, to make the early construction of these facilities a personal goal and an enduring legacy.
Responding to the chiefs’ gesture, Mr. Kotey expressed deep gratitude and stated that the DVLA would take up the project next year as part of its authorized commitment to establish a permanent and highly functional presence in the Sissala East Municipality.
The Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, who delivered the keynote address, praised the partnership between the DVLA and the traditional authorities. He emphasized that the government’s decentralization agenda is designed to bring essential public services closer to communities to stimulate local economies and build investor confidence.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sissala East Hon. Mohammed Issah Bataglia, in his speech, highlighted Tumu’s strategic position as a border town. He urged the new office to work closely with the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority and the Police to safeguard government revenue and combat cross-border vehicle fraud.
The ceremony concluded with the official handing over of the temporary facility, with a strong call from all stakeholders for the public to cooperate with the newly posted staff and maintain the highest standards of road safety.
