A woman in active labour was safely delivered of a baby girl just outside the Guo Community-based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) facility on Wednesday afternoon after she reportedly became unable to walk into the labour room.
Yiri News’ correspondent, Mohammed Abdulai, was in Guo at about 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, attending to personal matters when I came across the unusual scene in front of the Guo CHPS facility.
He noticed a woman lying on the ground while another woman stood over her. I approached to find out what was happening and discovered that the woman on the ground, identified as Ms. Francisca Derkpol, was in labour and had apparently become unable to walk into the facility’s labour room.
A midwife at the facility, Ms. Ofori Augusta Mahmouda, quickly intervened and assisted Ms. Derkpol through the delivery.
Moments later, Ms. Derkpol safely delivered a baby girl.
Both mother and newborn are reported to be in good health following the delivery.
Speaking after the incident, Ms. Derkpol disclosed that she normally seeks medical care at Ko Polyclinic.
The incident offered a striking reminder of how quickly labour can progress and the importance of having skilled maternal health personnel available at community-level health facilities to respond to unexpected situations.
For me as a journalist who happened upon the scene, the incident was not only unusual but also a story worth documenting—particularly because of the prompt intervention of the midwife, which helped ensure a safe delivery for both mother and child.
