Kuurimah Ibrahim Umu, Executive Director of the Kuurimah Foundation, urged the youth of Wa West District in the Upper West Region to take an active role in demanding peace and development from their leaders at a Peace Campaign Durbar at Dorimon.
Addressing a diverse audience including traditional authorities, political representatives, market women, and community members, Umu emphasized the critical role of the younger generation in shaping a better future.
According to her, the youth should not passively accept the status quo but actively engage in advocating for their rights and the progress of their community.
“Do not inherit our conflicts,” Umu advised the youth adding “You have the power to create a better future. Demand peace from your leaders. Demand development. Demand a better life.”
Umu highlighted the adverse effects of persistent chieftaincy and land disputes on the development of the district.
She called on the younger generation to hold leadership accountable for their promises and to push for genuine efforts towards resolving these disputes and fostering peace.
The Executive Director of Kuurimah Foundation also underscored the importance of unity and collective effort in addressing the economic and social issues affecting Wa West, especially as the 2024 general election approaches.
She criticized politicians for focusing on election campaigns rather than addressing the pressing needs of the people of Wa West and called for a renewed commitment to peace and development.
Umu urged everyone to put the needs of the country above individual interests and work together for a prosperous future saying “Peace is not just a word; it’s a choice.”
“Politicians, I’m talking to you! You come to our district, make promises, and leave. But what have you done to bring lasting peace to our community?” Umu questioned.
She stressed that conflict has only led to suffering, displacement, and underdevelopment, and called for leaders who will listen to the concerns of the people and work tirelessly to resolve disputes.
