The District Chief Executive (DCE) of the Daffiama Bussie Issa (DBI) district, Nadi Imoro Sanda has commissioned a new CHIPS (Community-based Health Planning and Services) compound in Bonongyiri, which he believes will significantly enhance primary healthcare in the area.

The facility, constructed at an estimated cost of GHS 360,000, is set to serve not only the residents of Bonongyiri but also neighbouring communities, bringing much-needed medical services closer to their doorsteps.

The DCE emphasized the vital role the new CHIPS compound will play in improving the health outcomes of the district’s population. “The people of Bonongyiri have long needed a facility like this to provide basic healthcare services,” the DCE said.

He added that the CHIPS compound would help reduce the distance residents previously had to travel to receive care, cutting down both travel costs and time.

Though located in Bonongyiri, the DCE highlighted that the CHIPS compound is designed to serve a wider population across the Challa Electoral Area and beyond.

“Communities like Bonongyiri Challa, and Kenkenlee will also benefit. The facility is for anyone who finds themselves in this area in need of medical attention,” he stated.

This wider access is expected to improve healthcare outcomes in the district by increasing the number of people seeking timely medical help, rather than relying on self-medication or travelling long distances to other towns.

The DCE was particularly optimistic about the facility’s impact on maternal health, noting that pregnant women will now be able to access routine check-ups and antenatal care without the need for extensive travel.

“This will encourage more women to seek regular medical attention during pregnancy, reducing complications and improving overall maternal health outcomes,” he said.

He further explained that having a healthcare facility nearby would also encourage parents to bring their children in for treatment, helping to reduce the prevalence of childhood illnesses in the area.

The DCE disclosed that the Bonongyiri CHIPS compound is the first of several health initiatives planned for the Challa Electoral Area. “We are also building another CHIPS compound in Kenkenlee, and we’ve supported the community in Challa with materials to build their own maternity ward,” he revealed.

The DCE underscored the district’s commitment to expanding healthcare infrastructure to ensure no community is left behind.

As he handed over the CHIPS compound to the people of Bonongmyiri, the DCE called on the community to take responsibility for maintaining the facility. “It is crucial that the community takes good care of this compound. If it falls into disrepair, it may take years to find the funds for renovation,” he warned.

He cited the deteriorating state of the Challa health facility, which is set to undergo costly renovations soon, as a cautionary example.

The DCE ended by assuring residents that his administration was dedicated to improving the district’s healthcare system.

“We will continue to prioritize the health, education, and well-being of our people. This CHIPS compound is a testament to our commitment to making life better for everyone in the district.”
