The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Sissala West Constituency has condemned the violence in Butoro, which reportedly resulted in the deaths of two people following a disagreement over the naming of an educational facility.
In a statement signed by the Constituency Secretary, Abdul-Rauf Zini (PhD), the party expressed shock and sadness over the incident and extended its condolences to the bereaved families, as well as the people of Butoro and Tiiwi.
The NPP said disagreements over land ownership and the naming of public facilities were legitimate matters that should be addressed through dialogue and lawful processes, stressing that no land, name or facility was worth the loss of human life.
According to the statement, construction of the educational facility—awarded under the previous NPP administration—was suspended after tensions emerged among stakeholders in Butoro, in the Buwa (Zini) Traditional Area.
The project reportedly reached the foundation stage before the dispute over its name led to a stalemate. The decision to suspend construction was subsequently taken to protect lives and preserve peace in the area.
The NPP has appealed to all factions, youth groups and stakeholders in Butoro and Tiiwi to remain calm and exercise restraint. It particularly urged the youth of the Tiiwi and Dagaaba communities to avoid reprisal attacks.
The party also commended the District Security Council and other security agencies for their swift intervention to restore calm. It called on residents to cooperate with the authorities as investigations continue and efforts are made to bring those responsible to justice.
The NPP further appealed to the Buwa Traditional Council, the Sissala West District Assembly, opinion leaders, youth representatives and family heads to urgently convene an inclusive stakeholder meeting to resolve the underlying land and naming dispute.
It also cautioned residents at home and abroad against making inflammatory comments on social media or circulating unverified information that could worsen tensions.
“The development of Sissala West requires unity and peace. Let us not allow this tragic incident to divide us,” the statement said.
The party prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
