Volunteers for Anthony Mwinkaara Sumah (VAMS), a youth-led group in Nadowli/Kaleo, began distributing 1,000 branded exercise books to selected junior high schools across the constituency
The donation started at Ombo St. Anthony JHS and continued to Kaleo Tendamba JHS and Chaangu RC JHS.
At each school, VAMS members presented the exercise books bearing the photograph of Hon. Anthony Mwinkaara Sumah and addressed pupils on the value of education. Each learner is expected to get some two experience books.
The group noted that the donation goes beyond the books but the intentions and the pieces of advice as well as encouragements each of them is offered.
The group used the visits to warn learners against illegal mining, urging them to focus on studies rather than galamsey.
“We are employed and empowered because of education,” said Laare Ken, president of VAMS. “You must take your learning seriously. Galamsey is dangerous, criminal and unsustainable.” He added that VAMS will sustain education-focused interventions in the coming weeks.
Laare Ken also affirmed the continued commitment of Hon. Anthony Mwinkaara Sumah, Member of Parliament for Nadowli/Kaleo, to tackle education challenges in the district. The group plans to complete distribution to the remaining schools before their scheduled break on Thursday.
The move comes as the Nadowli/Kaleo district seeks to reverse a worrying decline in Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) performance. Local stakeholders say initiatives like VAMS’s school outreach can re-energise learners and contribute to improved outcomes.
In all the schools both teachers and learners have applauded VAMS for their thoughtfulness in embarking on such a project.
