The Upper West Regional Organizer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mohammed Hamid Saana, has accused several Members of Parliament (MPs) in the region of being “dormant” and failing to deliver meaningful development to their constituents.

According to him, despite the National Democratic Congress (NDC) securing all 11 parliamentary seats in the Upper West Region in the 2024 general elections, the overwhelming electoral support has not translated into commensurate development and opportunities for the people.

Speaking on Home Radio’s Sunrise programme, Mr. Saana said many residents had begun expressing disappointment with the NDC government and some of their elected representatives.

He argued that the region had not received adequate representation in government despite its strong support for the NDC, particularly in terms of ministerial appointments.

“Even though the people of the Upper West Region gave the NDC 11/11, the appointing authority did not replicate a similar gesture with appointments of ministers and other portfolios. The whole region was given one cabinet ministerial position and a deputy minister. Even Sukparu had to fight hard to be given his appointment,” he said.

Mr. Saana further criticised what he described as the lack of visible action by some MPs in addressing the pressing concerns of their constituents.

He cited Nandom as an example, claiming that residents seeking employment opportunities were often told that such decisions depended on the central government.

“Just look at a constituency like Nandom. Anytime they ask about employment opportunities, the current MP would say it is a cabinet decision,” he stated.

He also questioned the level of engagement between the leadership of the NDC government and some MPs from the region, citing the Nadowli-Kaleo constituency.

“In Nadowli-Kaleo, after all the long years of Alban Bagbin in Parliament, you can testify that the current MP is even missing, and I am sure he has never met President Mahama after the elections. There is little action in most of the constituencies in the region,” he alleged.

The NPP Regional Organizer, who is a former Regional Youth Organizer of the party, therefore called on the people of the Upper West Region to reconsider their voting pattern in future elections, arguing that electoral support should translate into tangible development.

He maintained that the NPP was reorganising and positioning itself to regain parliamentary seats in the region.

Mr. Saana expressed confidence that the party could make significant gains in the 2028 general elections, including increasing its parliamentary representation and improving the electoral fortunes of the party’s 2028 presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

He said the newly elected regional executives were determined to work with constituencies and grassroots members to rebuild the party and restore its competitiveness across the region.
