Hon. Jonas Basiera Sankara, Upper West Regional Youth Organizer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has officially declared his intention to contest for the party’s National Youth Organizer position.
Speaking on Saturday, August 22, during the Upper West Regional Youth and TEIN Conference at Grand View Hotel, Wa, Sankara outlined more than two decades of service to the NDC. “My service has been tried on youth mobilisation, tested in governance,” he said, stressing that service motivates his candidacy.
Sankara thanked the current national executives for their work and expressed his desire to build on their achievements. He also acknowledged the support of key regional figures, including Speaker of Parliament Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Bagbin, financier Alhaji Uthman Gbangu, the Upper West Regional Minister, the regional chairman, and all 11 Members of Parliament from the region.
“I, Basiera Sankara, have served with humility and I’m ready to serve again,” he said, calling for support “across the length and breadth of Ghana.”
Sankara currently serves as Upper West Regional Director for the Youth Employment Agency and is dean of regional youth organizers for the NDC nationwide. His past roles include deputy regional organizer, constituency youth organizer for Wa West, assembly member, presiding member and a brief tenure as District Chief Executive for Wa West in 2016.
Those present described him as hardworking, reliable and intelligent, and many view him as a strong candidate to succeed Hon. George Opare-Addo, the current National Youth Organizer, who now serves as Minister in charge of Youth Development.
Supporting Sankara’s bid, Upper West Regional Minister Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing urged NDC members to back him and to support Mutiu Rahman Esq. for the role of National Vice Chairman.
Regional Chairman Alhaji Abdul Nasir Saani called for unity within the party and urged patience, noting that benefits for all members take time to materialize.
