The leadership of Ahlussunna Wal Jama’a (ASWAJ) has suspended its National Deputy Imam, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed (Hafizahullah), from exercising any official responsibility within the organisation following an investigation into events that occurred during the 2026 Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the State House Eid Grounds in Accra.
The decision was communicated in a letter dated 16 July 2026, signed on behalf of the National Executive Council (NEC), following the adoption of a report submitted by the organisation’s Arbitration and Disciplinary Committee (ADC).
According to the letter, the committee was constituted under Article 9(F)(6)(b), (c), (d) and (f) of the ASWAJ Constitution to investigate an incident that occurred during the Eid-ul-Adha prayers held on 27 May 2026 at the State House Eid Grounds in Accra.
The committee held sittings between 8 and 10 June 2026, with a review session on 22 June 2026, before submitting its report to the National Executive Council on 9 July 2026.
The committee found that Sheikh Mohammed Kamil had been officially informed of the National Imam’s decision to appoint another individual to lead the Eid prayers and had been instructed not to attend the Eid Grounds in that capacity.
However, the committee concluded that despite receiving the directive, Sheikh Mohammed Kamil proceeded to the Eid Grounds and led the Eid-ul-Adha prayers in the presence of the National Imam.
The report further stated that the deputy imam was invited to appear before the Arbitration and Disciplinary Committee during its investigations but failed to honour the invitation.
After reviewing the committee’s findings and recommendations, the National Executive Council adopted the report and ordered the immediate implementation of its recommendations.
As part of the disciplinary measures, the NEC directed Sheikh Mohammed Kamil to render an unqualified apology, both personally and in writing, to the National Imam and the worldwide membership of ASWAJ for conduct it said had brought the image of the organisation into public disrepute.
The council also endorsed the committee’s decision to suspend him from exercising any official responsibility within ASWAJ until further notice.
The letter indicated that the investigation and subsequent disciplinary actions were conducted in accordance with the Qur’an, the Sunnah and the Constitution of Ahlussunna Wal Jama’a.
Neither Sheikh Mohammed Kamil Mohammed nor his representatives had publicly responded to the disciplinary action at the time of publication.
