Technical officers from Maripoma Construction Limited, the contractor for the proposed Wa Airport project, have commenced preliminary survey works in the Upper West Region as government moves closer to the commencement of the long-awaited facility.
The team paid a courtesy call on the Wa Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Nurah Danwanaa, who received them on behalf of the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Esq.
According to the Mayor, the technical delegation visited the region to undertake initial assessments, including the siting of the airport’s runway and terminal building.
Alhaji Danwanaa said he accompanied the team to inspect the project site and urged them to expedite the technical processes to pave the way for a groundbreaking ceremony and the eventual start of construction works.
“The people of the Upper West Region have waited for this project for many years, and we expect the contractor to work diligently to ensure the project takes off as soon as possible,” he noted.
The survey exercise involved the collection of geographical coordinates and other technical data required for engineering designs and aerospace compliance.
Members of the technical team included Contract Manager, Shaiba Y. Issah; Commercial Engineer, Cui Yukun; Designer, Shu Junliang; Interpreter, Liao Xueying; and Surveying Engineer, Zeng Ri.
The proposed Wa Airport is expected to enhance air connectivity in the Upper West Region, boost trade and tourism, and improve access to economic opportunities.
Maripoma Construction Limited, the company undertaking the airport project, is also the contractor responsible for sections of the Hamile–Wa–Techiman road project. However, progress on that major highway project has attracted public concern in recent months due to reported delays in the execution of works.
Residents and road users have repeatedly called for faster completion of the Hamile–Wa–Techiman road because of its strategic importance to transportation and commerce in northern Ghana.
The commencement of survey activities for the Wa Airport project has therefore renewed public interest, with many residents expressing hope that lessons from ongoing road infrastructure challenges will lead to the timely execution of the airport project.
Government has consistently identified the Wa Airport project as a key infrastructure initiative aimed at opening up the Upper West Region to investment and improving transportation links within Ghana and beyond.
