The Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly has allocated GH¢350,000 from the District Assemblies Common Fund to support 110 persons with disabilities (PWDs) under this year’s disability empowerment programme.
Speaking at the distribution ceremony, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Mary Haruna, said the intervention marks the implementation of the government’s decision to increase the allocation of the Common Fund for persons with disabilities from 3% to 5%.
She explained that the support is designed to promote economic independence, improve health and enhance the dignity of persons with disabilities, stressing that every individual possesses talents and abilities that can contribute meaningfully to the district’s development.
According to the DCE, beneficiaries are receiving assistance in four key areas,
income generating activities, educational support, medical assistance and assistive devices.
She noted that those receiving livelihood support will use the resources to establish or expand businesses, farming activities and other sustainable ventures, while educational assistance will help students overcome financial barriers to pursue their academic aspirations.
Hon. Haruna further disclosed that the Assembly is supporting the Nadowli-Kaleo District Hospital to procure psychotropic medications and is also providing medical assistance to persons with disabilities undergoing specialised treatment.
The Assembly also extended support to the Ghana National Association of the Deaf, recognising the association’s role in advocating for the rights and inclusion of deaf persons within the district.
The DCE praised President John Dramani Mahama for increasing the disability fund allocation and for implementing free tertiary education for persons with disabilities, describing both interventions as significant milestones in advancing inclusive development.
