The Nandom Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Anthony Ziniel, has directed the Municipal Social Welfare Department to take steps to support Mr. George Bewaar, a physically challenged teacher who recently appealed for assistance to acquire a new means of transportation.

The directive follows a publication highlighting Mr. Bewaar’s mobility challenges and his appeal for GH¢15,000 to purchase a Luojia motorbike, which can be modified to make it disability-friendly.

Mr. Bewaar has relied on a disability bike for more than a decade to commute and attend to his daily activities. However, the bike has deteriorated significantly after years of use, leaving him with increasing difficulties in moving around.

Despite his physical challenges, Mr. Bewaar has persevered and pursued a career in teaching, continuing to contribute to the education of children in his community.

Following the publication of his appeal, the Nandom Municipal Director of Social Welfare, Naa Biliguo Shirazdeen Enoch, disclosed that the Municipal Assembly would support Mr. Bewaar in acquiring a new motorbike.

According to him, the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Anthony Ziniel, has directed the Social Welfare Department to handle the matter and work towards providing the needed assistance to Mr. Bewaar.

The intervention is expected to provide much-needed relief to the teacher and restore a more reliable and suitable means of transportation for him.

Mr. Bewaar’s situation has also drawn attention to the broader challenges faced by persons with disabilities who are striving to work and contribute meaningfully to their communities but often encounter barriers to mobility and accessibility.

For Mr. Bewaar, a reliable and disability-friendly motorbike would go beyond transportation. It would enhance his independence, improve his ability to commute to work and make it easier for him to continue serving his community as a teacher.

The Municipal Assembly’s intervention therefore represents an important step towards supporting a resident who has demonstrated considerable resilience in overcoming the challenges associated with his disability.

While the Assembly has initiated steps to address his immediate need, additional support from individuals, organisations, philanthropists and disability-focused institutions could further complement the intervention and help ensure that Mr. Bewaar receives a sustainable mobility solution.
