The Headmaster of Kanton Senior High School, Kuoro Savei Zakaria Mahamud, has made a passionate appeal to international donors and the local assembly to urgently provide the school with decent sanitary facilities to match its growing student population.
The headmaster made this plea during a mini durbar organized jointly by Kanton Senior High School and Tumu Senior/Technical School to officially hand over a newly constructed 15,000-litre capacity mechanized water system.
The vital infrastructure was funded by Direct Aid Ghana and Kuwait Charity to improve access to safe drinking water on campus.
While expressing deep appreciation to the donors for resolving the school’s acute water needs, Kuoro Mahamud pointed out that sanitation remains a severe challenge. He disclosed that Kanton SHS is currently in the process of being upgraded to a Category ‘A’ school. This transition, which includes the ongoing expansion of classrooms and dormitories, will inevitably result in a massive influx of new students, further stretching the school’s non-existent decent toilet facilities.
The urgency of the situation was further driven home by the students themselves. In a powerful display of advocacy, female students who delivered votes of thanks in five different languages all used their platform to echo the headmaster’s plea, appealing directly to the dignitaries for immediate intervention in building institutional toilets.
The commissioning team, led by Sissala East Municipal Chief Executive Hon. Adamu Yakubu and representatives from Direct Aid Ghana, including regional advocate Alhaji B. M. Adam, acknowledged the infrastructure deficits. Hon. Yakubu highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to sanitation, noting that 10 percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund is dedicated to water and sanitation projects to improve living conditions across the municipality.
As captured on the project signage in file, the newly handed-over water project (Registration No. 2026GHAWAT5001) marks a major milestone for the school’s hygiene. However, school authorities and students alike hope that the donors and the municipal assembly will swiftly answer this latest call to action to prevent a looming sanitation crisis as the school elevates to Category ‘A’ status.
