The Department of Fashion Design and Textiles at Dr. Hilla Liman Technical University (DHLTU) dazzled audiences during its 6th Fashion Show Exhibition, held over two days under the theme “From Loom to the Runway: Creative Expression From the North.”
The well-attended event attracted guests from across Ghana’s fashion sector, including representatives of the Ghana National Tailors and Dressmakers Association, lecturers, technical and vocational students and teachers, and members of the public.
The exhibition showcased final-year student collections developed as part of their practical assessment.
Head of Department Isaac Kofi Awuya told Yiri News the theme highlights the rich smock textile traditions of northern Ghana and challenges students to reimagine those fabrics for contemporary wear — from casual and corporate styles to special-occasion garments. “We want to integrate northern textile heritage into mainstream fashion and demonstrate what our graduates can offer,” Mr. Awuya said. He also noted that admissions for the next academic year are open and encouraged applicants from vocational, arts, and practical backgrounds to apply.
Designers and students described the exhibition as more than an academic requirement. Final-year student Munawaratu Tahiru said that while the course demands dedication, creativity makes the work rewarding. “I have a good eye for beauty and I’ve not regretted studying fashion and design. I urge younger people to consider this path,” she said. Fellow designer Abdulai Abdul Rauf emphasized the program’s role in fostering self-employment and called for additional resources, such as industrial sewing machines, to enhance practical training.
The showcase left many vocational and technical students who visited as guest inspired; several told Yiri News they plan to pursue fashion design and textiles at DHLTU after seeing the student work on display.
The Department’s exhibition reaffirms DHLTU’s commitment to practical, heritage-informed fashion education and to preparing graduates for industry and entrepreneurship.
