Former Lawra MP Hon. Samson Abu has declared his intention to contest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) position of Upper West regional secretary.
A former District Chief Executive for Lawra during the John Evans Atta Mills administration, Sampson Abu says he is ready to replace the incumbent regional secretary and Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing. Abu, a health administrator who previously worked with the Ghana Health Service (GHS), returned to the service after leaving Parliament and currently serves as Administrator of Wa Municipal Hospital.
Sources close to Hon. Abu say he has held widespread consultations with party members across the region and is optimistic about his chances. Supporters point to his administrative experience in both local government and the health sector as assets for the regional secretary role.
However, some political observers say Hon. Abu’s decision to run as an independent candidate during the last parliamentary contest in Lawra could undermine his credibility within party ranks. Others argue that the party has since reconciled with Abu and that his track record warrants consideration.
Local party activity is increasing ahead of the NDC’s internal elections. Yiri News can also confirm interest from the region’s current youth organizer, Hon. Jonas Basiera Sankara, who is reportedly preparing to contest the regional secretary position though he has not formally declared.
Our sources say Basiera Sankara has carried out extensive consultations and previously held several party roles, including deputy regional organizer and multiple terms as Wa West constituency youth organizer. He also served briefly as a DCE and as an assembly member and presiding member for Wa West District.
The NDC has released a timetable for elections at various levels, prompting several party faithful across the Upper West region to consult widely and declare their intentions.
